10 Questions

  1.      What product or service have we taken inspiration from? An ordinary fabric face mask has inspired TriMask to improve its features and bring out its best quality. Due to the low efficacy of an ordinary fabric face mask, TriMask brings you a better one – a cloth mask that is as effective as surgical mask. 2.      What are its key features and benefits? TriMask is a reusable, washable, and breathable cloth mask. Like the surgical face masks, it is three-layered but whose materials are sustainable – cotton inner absorbent layer, spunbonded non-woven polypropylene (NWPP) middle filter, and polyester non-absorbent outer layer. The outer layer is coated with plant-based wax to add a water-repellent, hydrophobic property. The three-layered mechanism and hydrophobic wax coating ensure additional protection against the transmission of communicable disease, thus increasing the efficacy of the usual, non-layered cloth mask. Not only does...

Theoretical Background

Image
TriMask is a water-repellent cloth mask with three layers. Different studies have shown that three-layered masks are more effective and safer than one- or two-layered masks (Bahl et al., 2020; Fischer et al., 2020; Sharma et al., 2021). Unlike the single- and double-layered masks where large droplets pass through and atomize into aerosols or tiny droplets, triple-layered masks can prevent big droplets from a sneeze or cough from being atomized into aerosols. Aside from preventing the atomization of droplets, the three layers of the mask can also block small particles from penetrating through mask pores (Connor, 2021). Both are necessary for the aerosols not to leak and linger in the air. As such, cloth masks can similarly perform as surgical masks, given that it contains three layers (University of Surrey, 2021). Therefore, three-layered cloth masks can be as effective as surgical masks in lessening the transmission of infectious diseases like COVID-19. Although additional layers imp...

Project Description

Features TriMask is a reusable mask made with multipurpose features and multi-layer technology, unlike conventional fabric or surgical masks. This face mask contains three sustainable material layers: cotton inner absorbent layer, spun-bonded NWPP middle filter, and polyester non-absorbent outer layer. The cotton absorbent innermost layer is breathable. In addition, the fabric is created from several layers of organic cotton that are very effective in removing aerosols with a diameter of less than one nanometer (Cariki, 2021). The second layer, which is spun-bonded NWPP middle filter, is used in both N95 and medical masks. NWPP, which is hypoallergenic, absorbent, water-resistant, and lightweight, is utilized in the TriMask. The NWPP can improve defenses against both entering and exiting microbes. Polypropylene, used as the middle filter in the TriMask, cannott be diverted (Clase, Charles-Francois de Lannoy, & Laengert, 2020). Water, sweat, and other liquids will not be absorbed by...

Mechanism Description

One of the greatest features of TriMask is its filtration mechanism. Polyester fabric is a hydrophobic polymer that can easily block respiratory droplets from the external environment. Its particle size ranges between 60nm - 4µm, which is highly unfavorable for microbes to penetrate but good enough for gas diffusion. On the other hand, the randomness of fibers in a spun-bonded NWPP filter for the inner layer provides high particle filtration. This is similar to how filters work in actual surgical masks. This is also the recommended filter by the WHO for washable face masks because of its high integrity (The Conversation, 2020). For the inner layer, cotton will be used because, aside from it being purely cellulose, it has a high affinity to water molecules, especially to those coming from the internal environment when the mask is worn. Cotton is hydrophilic and has a soft texture which would be suitable as an inner material for both the comfort and safety...

Assembly and Testing

Image
Assembly The development of TriMask will require two (2) major processes: the production of plant-based wax and manufacturing of the mask itself. A.     The production of plant-based wax . Due to the abundance and its rapid growth on nearly everywhere in the Philippines, the taro plant will be used as the primary element for bio-wax production. 1.      Harvesting . The heart-shaped taro ( Colocasia esculenta ) leaves will be harvested from a local plantation in Cavite. 2.      Preparation . Collected leaves will undergo preliminary processes before proceeding to wax extraction. Leaf sample preparations include washing and slicing. (a) Wash the leaf sample under running water for at least 3 minutes or until soil and other unnecessary fragments are removed, and (b) slice the leaf sample into smaller pieces with an about 0.25 x 0.25 in measurement. 3.      Extraction . In a rotary bottle, prepare 500mL of chloroform...

Discussion

Difficulties during Development   Amid the challenge in developing the product, the crisis of COVID-19 boosts innovation and ideas for better and effective face masks. The development of TriMask's revolutionary features and technology changed how we look at protection and comfort. This product brings effective and best protection that the public need today. TriMask adopts technology and creates value from ideas. TriMask is an innovation crafted through exploring and redesigning a more effective facemask where it was subjected to different tests to ensure its optimal function. The efficiency and sustainability of TriMask connects the needs of the people and environment by its value. Difficulties upon Implementation Monopolizing the market will be one of the major problems that may be encountered when  the product is released since this is not as cheap as the conventional face mask. The effectivity and reusability, as proven in the methodology of innovation, is...
